Antimicrobial agents and resistant bacteria: A brief history

Henry Glitch

Antimicrobial chemotherapy has had a significant positive impact on human health. In the second half of the nineteenth century, a range of bacteria that cause infectious diseases were discovered. Following that, antimicrobial chemotherapy made significant progress in the twentieth century, leading to the unduly optimistic belief that infectious diseases will be eradicated in the near future. Microorganisms that have gained drug resistance through a number of methods have arisen in reaction to the introduction of antimicrobial medicines, and they continue to trouble humans. The right use of currently available antimicrobial medications, as well as attempts to reduce the transmission and spread of resistant bacteria through good infection control, would be the first step towards tackling the issue of resistant organisms.
